My pc rebooted on its own yesterday and upon reboot i recieved a message
saying:

Verifying DMI Pool Data.........
Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM:
Boot from ATAPI CD-ROM:
DISC BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER

I don't have any discs in any of the drives and didn't at the time of the
reboot either. I suppose my hard drive went out on me. If so, is it possible
to recover data from it bad hd after installing a new? Thanks.

I sometimes get that from flaky molex power connectors. Did you try a
different connector on the drive? If the drive failed you may still be able
to retrieve info. They have some
free software programs and of course non free. Do a google search for
Retrieving Data off failed hard drive.

i havent tried connections, but i will, thanks.

Yes it is possible, but it's not guaranteed. A lot depends on the type and
extent of failure.

For example, if the drive has failed electrically and won't spin up, there
is pretty much nothing you can do yourself. No software will do anything
to a drive with damaged electronics. You have to determine the value of the
data against the state of the backups, and if the difference is large you
need the services of a recovery house. This will likely start at over
$1000 in this situation. They'll open the case and attach the platters to
custom and very expensive hardware, and attempt to recover the data.

Get a demo copy of R-Studio and install it to another system. Attach your
old drive to it, and let R-Studio have a look and see if it can recover
anything, or even scan the drive. This will give you a good idea of the
extent of the damage and what can be recovered.

This is really not a hard drive problem and the hard drive, itself,
is probably still OK. The issue is usually the failure of the bios
to identify the hard drive and locate its boot sector or tracks.

Good luck.
