hi guys

Since I reformatted my hard drive the other day, I have been unable to
reinstall windows on it. The drive is showing up in the BIOS and in the
windows installer, however it can not be accessed.

I have tried this hard drive in a different pc, and the same thing happens -
it shows up in the BIOS and in the devices manager, but not in my computer or
computer management. I've uploaded a screenshot at
http://beatnik.bytehost.com/images/drives.jpg so you can see what I mean. The
same problem occurs under linux btw.

I've run out of ideas, so if anyone has any it'd be much appreciated. Thanks

Since the problem occurs in Linux, you know the issue is either with the
hard drive or with the way you formatted it. Did you use any kind of
drive overlay or a formatting utility not from Windows (or Linux)?

If you didn't, run a thorough diagnostic on the drive with a utility
downloaded from the drive mftr.

Downloading a diagnostic tool was a stroke of genius, but it didn't even
find the drive :(

I just formatted the drive as part of the windows installation procedure. I
forgot to mention that I also deleted the two partitions which were on it and
created one large one (before I formatted!).

Any more ideas? Thanks again for your help.

If the diagnostic didn't even find the drive, the drive is toast. Throw
it out and buy a new one. You know it isn't your motherboard because
you tried the drive in a different computer. You did everything right
as far as t-shooting goes - there ain't no more. If the drive is still
under warranty, RMA it.

Yeah, I guess you're right. It's just the fact that the drive still shows up
in BIOS that was confusing me. Thanks again dude.

haha, sorry. it wasn't supposed to be a gender specific dude... =D I just
looked at your website, it's awesome

oh yeah, I fixed the hard drive. I was on the maxtor website looking for a
sata driver for my other hard drive, when I came across their hard drive
installation program. I figured it couldn't hurt to try, and it ended up
working no problem! So the moral of the story is: never use the windows xp
partition tool =D
