I am helping my friend and her Windows XP PC hard drive crashed and all it does not is show the BSOD(blue screen of death). I am trying to get 'tax' information off of it before we reformat the drive. Any idea other than spending a fortune, to get the data off the hard drive.
PC: dell windows xp (she doesn't know if Pro or Home
Virus: Norton
Error message that shows up is 'file SAVRT.sys is corrupted or missing'

No I forgot to mention I also tried that. I check on a XP pc I had at home to see if I could set up a slave/master scenario but NOT to be.

Nothing to do with Slave or master mate.

You need to try tapping the f8 key before the computer gets to BSOD usually after the first screen of white text.
Try it and tap the F8 key repeatedly.

It should give you some options The first one being Boot into safe mode

You should be able to plug it in as a second hard drive - what was the problem when you set it as a slave drive?

I always tap the DELETE key to get into Bios .

Yeah me too mate

but it aint the BIOS he need to get into.

Safe mode will allow him to run Chkdsk

Will will scan for any abnomolies on the partition

As Ian said the only other safe option is to put it in a second system as a slave and back up any important documents that way

I'll get to grips with reading and understanding one day .

Guys I have recovered so much data for people using simple tools like ERD Commander or Hirens Boot CD, both these cd's are bootable and always use your RAM to rum and not your HDD to install.
If you connect your hdd to another PC as a USB this will prove best fro you as not only can you leave the jumper settings as primary (thats if it is master) but also that you can get faster result due to the transfer speeds

If anyone loves IT to extent that they love learning more than just surfing the web try ERC comander or Hirens this will bring a new world to you

njoy
