Well here's the problem. I had an IBM 60.0 GB drive (Don't have the
thing with me to say more about it, I'm at a public terminal). I
don't know for sure that I have a head crash or just what happened.
This drive was in a Dell I've owned for about 2.5 years, so I called
Dell tech support. Using error codes they determined it was a
failure, or a crash. Here's the thing though, I start the computer up
with the drive installed and it boots up, not completely, but gets me
to the WinME startup screen where it stagnates and never (I've left it
on for several hours) boots into WinME. I've tried installing the
hard drive into other computers with somewhat similar results, always
as a secondary or slave drive. On the Win98 computer I reinstalled it
on, Win98 failed to start up after a similar delay. The BIOS,
obviously, recognizes the hard drive.
I'm wondering three things, whether the mechanics of my hard drive are
intact (I shouldn't get the WinME startup screen in the event of a
head crash, no?), what brand and specs of hard drive is recommended if
I have to replace the hard drive (Western Digital good?), and what my
course of action should be.
