XP has nothing that you can use to back up an entire hard drive. XP does
come with a Backup Utility that can be used for backing up data.

Windows XP ships with a backup program, ntbackup, that is
installed by default on the Professional version. If you have
the Home edition, you'll have to go to the
VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP folder on your XP installation CD and
run ntbackup.msi. If you don't have an installation CD, you can
download the installation file here:

Installing the Backup Program on the Home Version

Keep in mind that the Windows Backup program cannot backup
directly to CD. It's best used to backup data files to a
location on an external hard drive or tape drive. If you want
to save data to CD's, you'd have to save the file to your hard
drive first and then burn it to a CD. That said, NTBackup is
capable of providing a basic backup solution.

A far better option would be to obtain a program such as Norton
Ghost or Acronis True Image. Both of these programs are capable
of backing up your entire drive.

Here are a couple of other programs you might want to consider
using.

Maybe it's just me, but clicking on that link took me to a page

Hi!

I use NT backup, but have the same problem on 3 diffrent computers. 1
running win xp pro and 2 of them running win 2000 pro. The Backup stops just
before it reaches 4 gb and says the media is full. The usb harddrive is empty
and 190 gb so its far from full. Any ideas?

Hi Jimmy,

Let me guess...the backup media is formatted as FAT32, right? It has a file
size limit of 4GB minus a few bytes. This is a limitation of that file
system, to create larger backups you need to format as NTFS.

Well, I tried the "%systemroo%\system32\clipbrd.exe" and got a file not
found. So I just right clicked on the desktop again, clicked "new", clicked
"shortcut", keyed in "clipbrd.exe". next and finished. A neat little
clipboard icon popped up and when I double clicked on it there was the Clip
Board Reader window with an active window for what I wanted to print.

That's because you're missiing a "t" at the end of "systemroot."

I went to the suggested website and downloaded the needed installation file
(nbackup.msi), but when I tried to install it on my computer, I received the
following error message: The cabinet file 'cabs.nbackup.CAB' required for
this installation is corrupt, and cannot be used, etc. Error code: 2350.

Any suggestions to obtain a good installation file?

I do not have a copy of the Windows XP Home Edition CD-Rom disk to use to
obtain the VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP folder.

Thanks, Thomboy
