Hard Drive Activity

Saxman

I have a small utility which indicates hard drive activity on the taskbar.
I put a copy of the exe file on the desktop, but everytime I execute it, it
creates a dat file on the desktop. This is a minor annoyance, but the
program works well.

I have no light on my computer that indicates hard drive activity.

Are there any other alternatives out there?

Instead of a copy of the exe file, put a shortcut of it on the desktop.
It now should create the dat file in its original directory, instead of on
the desktop.

What is your OS?
What program are you talking about?
What happens if you put a shortcut on your desktop instead of the .exe
file?

How come you have no HD activity light ??
Tell us the exact make / model of board & your case setup?
Are there HD pins vacant where the case wires connect to the MB? Is there a
light for it on the case but it isn't working?

Some PCs don't have an indicator light for HDD activity. My
Gateway...about 4 years old...doesn't have one. There was no cutout on
the case and it wasn't worth rooting around looking for the pins.

Yeah, a couple of years ago the company I work for leased a bunch of
IBMs that didn't have hard drive lights, but did have a network light
that blinked steadily. Go figure.

(BTW - we were not allowed to open the lease boxes)

The program is a stand-alone, so the exe file is the progream!

Of course, but you don't have to have the exe file on your desktop. Put it
in its own folder somewhere else, then create a shortcut to it on your
desktop. The dat file will most likely not be put on your desktop anymore,
but in whatever folder you placed the exe file.

Which means, you were supposed to store your work on the server, not
the local drive. Go figure. ;-P

Windows XP Pro.

Put the .EXE in a sub-directory. Put a shortcur on the desktop. The
other file will now be created in the sub-directory.

FWIW,, this is often the case with simple, non-installing
executables. The way around it is to store the executable in a
folder somewhere, and to run it via a shortcut on the desktop.

(I store my non-installing programs in a folder I created in
C:\Program Files, called "Stand Alone Programs" -- I've got 23 such
programs in there.)
