Hard drive access monitor?

I'm looking for an app that will monitor hard drive access and reveal
the process in use ( W98SE )
I've come across a problem with an old laptop whereby something is
accessing the hard drive very briefly and randomly, even when the
computer is 'idle' and all the usual suspects ( firewall etc ) have
been disabled.
All the usual checks and adjustments have been made ( swapfile, cache,
antivirus, apm etc ), it's a clean install and I've never come across
this problem before.

I've seen plenty of apps that show the current processes in use...but
what I need is an app that indicates which process is accessing the
hard drive.

Cheers,

How about the OSA (MS Office indexing service) prcess in the autorun
section (check msconfig.exe for autostart entries)? It kicks in, when
the machine apparently is not used, and causes a lot of hard disk
movements.

I can't say for sure, but I believe the Filemon of Sysinternals.com can
do this.

I don't use it ( or Office, even )
This is the rub, the setup is the same as I've used on dozens of
machines - and this is the first time I've had this problem. It could
be a native device driver...all I gotta do is suss out which one!

The blurb looks promising, I'll add it to my list of possibles,
thanks!

Another possibility: disable FastFind

It is (was) part of "std" windows install, FINDFAST.CPL in
system dir. Look for it in Control Panel.
Must be an option then, 'cos I've never seen it on any of my
installations. Can't find any mention of it in the registry, control
panel or msconfig.

Don't have it...isn't part of the Office Suite?

Pretty sure it is. If one doesn't have Office installed then I don't
think they have FastFind. A query in one of the windows OS
newsgroups would probably resolve the matter though.

Regards, John.

Hummmm.... I've had to disable it in every Office program. Perhaps
the UK version is different than the USA one? Here it not only was
installed initially with the OS but also it placed FF in the Start-Up folder!

I always do a 'custom' install, Fastfind is probably one of the
optional 'extras' I don't install.
