You want to backup any data RIGHT NOW.

If your laptop is still under warranty take it to an hp service center and
they'll order you up a new drive.

Depending on the shop and on the state of your drive, you might be able to
have them try cloning the contents of your old drive onto the new. If all
goes well it really isn't more difficult than cloning it off a restore cd.
It can also open up a can of worms so most anyone would want to charge you
something extra. If it works it will save you the time of reloading all
your apps and retweaking everything to perfection. But don't depend on it
and BACKUP DATA NOW. :)

HP Pavilion Laptop ZT1000 series
WinXP
512 MB RAM
40 GB IDE HD

I ran my HP's eDiagtools and it gave me this info in the report:

"[IDE HDD:(Pri Mst)]
IDE HDD : Failed
SMART error
Error Code: 9640
TEST FAILED

[Defective Components]

IDE hard disk drive SMART error: drive(Pri Mst)
Your IDE hard disk is about to fail.
1. Back up your data.
2. Replace the IDE hard disk.
Contact your service provider for further assistance."

I haven't noticed any problems with copying files or burning CDs/DVDs.
Can anyone recommend a good utility program to run for something like
this? I have Norton Systemworks 2003 (not installed). Laptop HDs are
expensive and I'm not apt to replace this one unless I really have to.

Thanks for the responses, I will do that. There is no warranty because I
got it "refurbished."

Reputable firms attach new warranties to refurbished goods.
