Hi.. I noticed one of my hard disc (the master and the windows installed) is using PIO Mode transfer.. This HDD its a Western DIgital WD400EB-00CPF0 and my slave HDD its an SAMSUNG SP0802N. The slave HDD is using a DMA ultra mode 5.
When i move any file from the master disc to the slave, it take a lot of time to transfer and in general, i feel the read task on the master disc is some slow.
How can i change the type of the mode transfer on the master disc? i have the cofiguration to use DMA if there's available on both discs.

Thanks.

PIO mode selects the data transfer between hd and memory,if yo
have intel hardware download the application accelerator and selec
DMA mode thru it,its also storage drivers for the board.Usually both
settings are configured in the BIOS under IDE settings. The wd driv
is good for ultra DMA-5 and beyond.

Open the Device Manager and locate the entry for your IDE hard drive controller and expand it. Double click the Primary and/or Secondary IDE Channel and you'll see the Advanced Settings tab. Set that particular drive's channel to DMA if available.

Use DMA Mode For All ATAPI Drives

Slave drives on ATAPI channels are often set to PIO mode by default, even if
they are capable of modes such as UltraATA
or DMA, which allow more efficient data transfers. This means CD/DVD
burning, DVD playback, and other performance
may suffer unnecessarily.

To fix this problem, in Windows 2000 or XP, open the System applet in the
Control Panel and select Device Manager in the
Hardware tab. Expand the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers section and double click
on the Primary IDE Channel. Choose Advanced Settings, and change the
transfer mode for each drive to DMA if possible. Repeat this with the
Secondary IDE Channel.

Open the Device Manager and locate the entry for your IDE hard drive
controller and expand it. Double click the Primary IDE Channel and you'll
see the Advanced Settings tab. If the transfer rate is set at PIO Mode even
if use DMA if Available is chosen then click on the Driver Tab and then
click on uninstall. Reboot the computer and the hardware will be found again
and should start working in DMA mode.

An additional point: WD drives are not always comfortable sharing a
cable with a different make. If it is possible to separate them, and
have the two drives as masters of the two IDE channels (with any CD as a
slave) then that is probably a good idea
