If you have a S.M.A.R.T. drive, turn on that function in your BIOS then
pick up one of the tools to read the status. SpeedFan is a freebie that
can also report SMART status.

HDD Health v2.1 Build 159

HDD Health is a full-featured failure-prediction agent for machines using
Windows 95, 98, NT, Me, 2000 and XP. Sitting in the system tray, it
monitors hard disks and alerts you to impending failure. The program uses
Self Monitoring and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) built into all new
hard disks, and can predict failures on your hard drives. A host of
alerting features include email, local pop-up messages, net messages, and
event logging, while using no system resources.

Wierd noises, eh. I'd not waste the last few remaining revolutions on testing
and rather get the data off there asap. A wierd noise is enough to call on the
warranty. IMHO.

If the noises have *changed* significantly, the odds that the drive will
die soon are very 'good'. :-(

You should use the mentioned test utilities or procedures (PowerMax,
SMART) only *after* you have done a backup of your data! And - if
the mentioned utilities don't find anything - you should nevertheless
try to redeem your warranty. If they don't do it, try to get a written
proof that you reported a defect within the warranty time. If the drive
dies soon thereafter you maybe get a compensation, still.
