After installing XP PRO my hard disk space went from 8.46 to 6.28. It says Ive used 2.17 GB? What is taking up all that space? Nothing else is installed!

That amount of disk space is not unusual for XP on a clean install, before
cleaning it up. What kind of install did you do?

Formatted my drive, then installed windows98 then installed XP Pro. I am running in FAT32 right now.

Do you want to keep 98? If not, you can do a clean install of XP from an
upgrade CD, no other OS needed. If you follow the instructions for a clean
install on the site below, all you will need to do is insert the 98 disk to
prove qualification for the up-grade. You will be prompted as to when,
during the install.

It's called Microsoft Bloatware, my friend. My XP Pro installation here at
work takes 1.85 GB - you may have a few more options installed. Each new
version of Windows takes more disk space and requires faster processors and
more memory. I think Microsoft has an agreement with the PC hardware
industry.
