I have attewmpted to install a new hdd in my Thinkpad running XP Pro. The 80GB Toshiba MK8025GAS drive (8455 mb capacity) is recognized as having 76317 mb of capacity when formatted. I have tried using partition wizard to see if there is another hidden partition or unpartitioned portion of the drive, but do not see anything. How do I recover the missing capacity? Thanks for your help.

Megabyte Mystery

There are two common definitions for a megabyte (MB):

Ten to the sixth power or 1,000,000 bytes, the pure
decimal value.

Two to the 20th power or 1,048,576 bytes, a value
commonly used when indicating computer memory size.

Data Lifeguard, Data Lifeguard DOS and Copy files
consider a MB to be 1,000,000 bytes. This corresponds to
the values you get if you do a DIR command or run CHKDSK.

When viewing the properties on a hard drive under Windows
it considers a MB to be 1,048,576 bytes and it considers
a GB to be 1,073,741,824 bytes.

If you view partitions created by Data Lifeguard with a
utility that considers a MB to be 1,048,576 bytes, such
as DOS FDISK or Windows 2000/XP Disk Management, the
partition size presented will be a lesser number of MB.
The actual storage capacity is the same.

Example: If a drive has 1024 cylinders, 16 heads and 63
sectors per track, Data Lifeguard will show a capacity of
528MB. FDISK will show a capacity of 504MB.

GB in windows =1,073,741,824 bytes.
76317 mb. x 1,073,741,824 bytes =
81,944,754,782,208.Thats pretty good, many come in under
80,you still have 81 available but window shows it as
76.Because the 1,073,741,824 thing.
