I have just started getting an error message on start up:
Pro slave Hard disk: S.M.A.R.T. Status BAD, Back Up and
Replace, press F1 to continue' after pressing F1 my comp
starts up ok and I can access the Hard disk, I tried to
do a Scandisk and it got stuck at 49% any idea what I can
do to fix any errors which are on the HD?
thanks, Zetor

I had the same problem only couldn't access the drive unless I used the drive manufactuers trouble disk. Back up everything you need off that drive and replace it. The SMART chip on the drive is dying. So backup now!

Hi Zestor,

Take the advice on your screen, backup and replace your HD. It means what it
is saying, the drive is defective. It could limp along for a year or more
or, it may not boot the next time you try.

It could also be pure B.S. My father's HD said that when we first
built it. We disabled SMART, and he's still using that same HD now,
over four years later.

I would follow the warning message and replace an the
H.D.

I think you and your father are both bush whackers, cave
men, rebel without a cause, idiot, retard, mentally
challenge, dont understand englais & dumb ass. I hope
both of you, idiot, know what does S.M.A.R.T mean.

Thanks for the info, I just wanted to check to see if it
is knackered and replacing was the only way, I am backing
up stuff now but it seems some files are already beyond
that, the drive is a Maxtor DiamondMax and only 7 months
old so under guarante, thanks again for the help.

If it's a Maxtor under warranty they will ship you a NEW drive for FREE while you are backing up stuff so there is little downtime. Call and ask them about it. All they need is a credit card number in case you forget to ship them the failing drive in less than 30 days. I forget the name of the program they do this under but they did it for me on a drive that was 3 years old.

Also their software MaxBlast will copy everything off the failing drive onto the new drive, and I mean everything including files that you may think are gone. At least it did for me. It will even set up the partions on the new drive the way they were on the failing drive

Try it

Thanks for your well though out and appropriately polite response.

Oh, and by the way, I manage help-desk operations and system
management for a 400+ computer IT shop. I think I know what SMART is
for. I certainly know a SMARTass when one responds.
