Llama Thumper

hi all,

have just bought a maxtor maxline III 300GB ATA harddisk, which works
fine. however i've noticed that it simply 'disappears' after coming out
of hibernation, as if it wasn't connected at all. when i restart it is
there again and works normally.

any hints anyone?

can't find anything in the BIOS that would relate to this, only hard
disk power-down settings, which are disabled...
anything else to look for?

Probably a driver problem. The driver may not wake the controler
and the disk correctly.

this only occurs on the secondary channel, as a slave. all other drives
wake correctly. maxtor doesnt have any drivers for their disks, so am
unsure as to what to do...

That would be the controller's driver, not the disk's. Sorry I
did not say that clearly.

However if all other drives wake correctly, the issue is likely
more complicated. Maybe a subtle incompatibility between
controller and drive.

Looks like the easiest solution is to either not hibernate or
to remove the Maxtor disk for another one (a good idea
anyways, since Maxtor has reliability issues).

right, for the record - the problem seems to have been solved (at least
everything's working fine until now...): my board only supports ATA100,
but the hard disk is ATA133. I was assuming it would automatically
switch to the lower speed, however somehow this didnt seem to happen.
Either way, buying a PCI ATA133 controller and hanging the HD off it
seems to have solved the problem.

Thanks for all the input!
