Sometimes when I'm on my PC and just reading things thru, but not doing
anything else, The Hard Disk light remains on continuously, indicating that
perhaps some program is working continuously in the background. How can I
find out what is going on and what can I do about it.
TIA

Hi

Have you got Indexing turned on?

You need to find the specific process in that application or process that's
causing all
the disk activity.

To do this try Process Explorer:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html

Once you have Process Explorer installed and running:
Click on the CPU column to sort processes by %CPU usage.
Then click on the process that using most or all the CPU %, once it
highlighted, right click
and from the options listed select: google
This should display what out there on the web about that process.

Note: some entries like Explorer and svchost may need to be expanded to show
the detail,
(sub processes), in this case click on the + located to the left on the
entry.

Hi

From Start>Run type

services.msc

then scroll down 'til you come to the Indexing Service. If 'Started' is in
the Status column - right click and select Stop.

I did that. It is on Manual and not on Automatic. When I went to it, it had
not started, It will start when required. Or shall I disable it?

Hi

If the Indexing Service hasn't been started then it's not that causing the
hard disk activity. I would suggest you leave that Service as it is.

When the HD light is working next time - open the Task Manager and see which
process is using the most CPU time.

It is the MsMpEng.exe. From google it says it is the Windows Defender
Auto-Protect service. I had installed Windows Defender recently. Would it be
wise for me to "End Process" it in Task manager?
