Hi. I have 2 hard disks, but disconnected the first in order to
successfully install XP Home (nightmare till I did this). Performed Fdisk
and then was finally able to launch setup. Install seemed fine, and XP is
basically performing as expected, except that hard disk is labeled as drive
e:\. floppy is a: as expected, Zip drive is c:\, CD-RW is d:\, XP partition
is drive e:\, excess space is unformatted drive f:\, and then g:\ is old
hard disk that I have since reconnected to transfer the files that I wanted
to keep, and.... h:\ is a USB compact flash card reader. Whew!

Problem is that some older programs have problems installing. Keep seeking
the c drive. No disk there. Don't want to install to zip. Unable to
browse to new location (not given as an option). Most are games for my
daughter but they are as essential to our daily life as the operating system
itself ;-) Therefore, if it is possible to set the hard disk to drive c:\
I would love to know how. It would certainly make my life easier.

Oh yeah... my computer is Feb. 2000, and supposedly the motherboard could
not handle the 180 GB WD hard disk that I purchased so they included a
(forgive me if my command of the nomenclature is shaky -- been six months
since I installed this drive) an IDE controller PCI card and cable. I
imagine this is why it is recognizing it farther down the heirarchy.
However, this drive was labeled as e:\ even when the original drive was
uninstalled.

Thanks!

Hi Debbliz,

You can't change the drive letter assigned to the system drive without
starting over. If you choose to, this time disconnect the zip drive first as
it is known to cause this issue. You can reconnect it afterward.
