Hello,

I recently updated my system to USB 2.0, and on the very same day I began
getting these random error messages.

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Disk
Event Category: None
Event ID: 51
Date: 11/8/2003
Time: 12:02:59 AM
User: N/A
Computer: BEDROOM
Description:
An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\D during a paging
operation.

Does anybody know what could be the cause of this? Any help would be
appreciated...

Also, just to be clear, the error isn't occurring on the USB drive... It is
happening on a RAID 1 drive attached to my onboard RAID controller.

Hi,

Unplug the power cord and open the chassis, check all the
harddisks connections (the power and flat ribbon cables)to
ensure they are connected tightly and properly.

Also run the disk diagnostic tools to ensure your harddisk
is not dying.

Peter,

I did check the cabling, and it is fine... I ran chkdsk also, and never
seem to have an error on the drive. Like I said, it seemed to begin right
after the USB 2.0 update, and I can't help but wonder if it is related to
that. Microsoft already has an update which addresses another disk related
problem after you update your USB drivers...

I wonder if I should install the update and see?

Go to the hard drive manufacturer's web site and download their
diagnostic utility and run that to check out the drive.

Good luck

Hello,

I had the same problem with my WD 500GB external drive... I tested the hdd with all the utilities possible... FINALLY.... I changed the USB CABLE with a better insulated(stiffer) and shorter cable... never had a problem since.

I wouldn't be surprised if bad SATA or IDE cables proved to be a big problem too.

May i add that i used the supplied cable that came with the hdd to find out that it is unsuitable. Gave me quite a fright ... losing 500GB of data.
