hi, happy new year, sorry for my bad english
~

i am looking for an utility that allows to copy an hard disk of a X-size to
another of this X-size or higher-than-x size, regardless of partitions
(hidden, non hidden, fat, ntfs, fat32, other) ... that simply "clones" an
hard disk to another.

If a free tool doesn't exist, i am also interested to a commercial tool that
is *perfect* for this work :-)

thanks for your time.

CasperXP - Future Solutions - they also have one that works
with earlier Windows. If you are doing a drive upgrade with
XP, this is the only way to go IMHO. There is a free and
commercial version available. Commercial version allows
alteration of paertition sizes. When it is done, XP will
restart with no fuss or bother as if it had always been the
new drive w/o re-activating

Have not tried myself, but found
Clone maxx - version 1.0
http://www.pcinspector.de/clone-maxx/uk/welcome.htm

PC INSPECTOR clone maxx can be started directly from a boot diskette. The
copying process is always based on the physical drive and is independent of
the file system (e.g. FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, HPFS, NTFS, Ext2, Reiser, etc.)
or the number of partitions.

This is how you start:

Clone maxx - version 1.0

The Program is run from a bootable floppy disk.
The Program can only clone a complete disk.
That is, if the source disk contains a C:\ with 40GByte, the destination
disk will also contain
a C:\ with 40GByte.

But if running Windows XP then

start > run > cmd

diskpart
Select disk 0
select partition 1
extend Size=tail in MB

Then the c:\ drive extends to the size given in MegaByte
but it is not possible to make it smaller.
If you want to extend to use the complete disk,
just write "Extend"

Sorry, it's not freeware, but Acronis True Image is great. You can
copy to smaller/larger partitions/hds, etc. It takes about 5 minutes or
so to create and about the same to restore. I am constantly trying new
software, I made a backup with my base XP install so I can easily revert
back to it after loading all the freeware I find here.8) It will make a
copy of the "live" partition (OS partition) while it is running. It has
it's own loader(reboot and run, or make a bootable cd disk) to restore
the OS partition(or any other). Install once, create the bootable cd &
from then on you don't even have to have it installed to use it. Great
program. Read about it here:
http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/
Once again, sorry about the OT payware post here, but they asked...
Won't happen again. 8)

i tried it ... it's very slow; i measured time and the ETA is right : 72
*days* for 128 GB :-/

HDClone is perfect for this purpose and may be downloaded from
http://www.miray.de/download/sat.hdclone.html

It creates a bootable floppy with its own OS so it will clone anything at
all regardless of file system. Be prepared for a looooooong process however.
I cloned a 60G drive and it took about 16 hours. Most of it was overnight so
it saved me a lot of work setting everything up again.
