Hard Disk Boot Problems

Recently, my computer will not get past the reading of the hard drives
during startup.

It reads the amount of Ram, it detects everything plugged in, it shows
the stats on the master Hard drive, but then when it should normally
show the stats for the slave and move on, it stops. I tried unplugging
the hard drive from the system and it stops when it should read the
master.

I had just changed to a new power supply of 200W, played with some new
files (mp3s and mpgs) and shut down. The next time I tried to start it
the problem started.

I don't know if it's a power problem, a possible virus from the new
files, or what.

Any suggestions???

Addition: Sorry, I left out some system info.
I do not know what the wattage was on the old power supply, so I don't
know if the new one is too small or not.

I have an athlon 700mhz processor, 512mb ram, 200 gb hard drive space(
120, 80), dvd, cd-rw, not sure what type motherboard.

Did you check jumpers are placed correctly ?? some bios systems can detect
master and slave hard disks with jumpers on. and some others without them.

Besides, enter to bios (when startup machine press delete) to make sure they
appear.

To start with, 200 Watts is pretty anemic...a modern system
with multiple hard drives, CD-RW and DVD drives, cooling fans,
etc., requires, IMO, a minimum of 400 Watts. But on the off
chance that the slave HD is defective, disconnect it from
the ribbon cable **and** the power supply; re-set the boot
HD as the single/master drive (per manufacturer's jumpering
guide) and see whether or not the computer still boots.

You installed a new power supply without first checking if it's correct for
your system...then you "played with some new
files" that you suspect may have infected your computer with a virus...and
you're wondering why you're having problems with your computer.

Kovik: Thanks, but I can't even get to the BIOS screen, even hitting
delete it still stalls before it gets to the BIOS

Mistoffolees: Thanks, I figured the power might me too weak I just had
this new power supply so I thought I'd replace my old one, looks like
I'll go back. I will try those things this weekend.

Ted: thanks for the input, but i'm not wondering why there's a problem,
i know i've caused a problem, just looking for some suggestions to fix
it, that is what forums are about. you were REAL helpful.. Thanks
again (no sarcasm, really, you helped). blaghhh

200 watts "may" be too low for your system. Anything below 300 watts for 3
drives (200GB HDD, CD, DVD) might not "cut it" for the power.
