I have an HP pavilion running XP-home and want to know
how to backup my files and data to an external hard
drive, and restore next time my system crashes.

Had a recent crash and though the HP partition was able
to restore the basic system files, I lost all the
software and more importantly DATA that I had placed on
the drive.

I now have an external hard drive but can't figure out
how to perform timed backups of the drive.

HELP!!!!!

NT Backup is not provided as a "component" in XP Home. It is available as
an optional "tool" in a separate folder on the XP CD. Many of the OEMs did
not provide this extra folder to their customers. You can ask them about
obtaining this tool but have yet to see an instance where they have sent it
as requested. Alternative backup programs are available for purchase from
various software vendors.

Thanks, Sharon. For those folks without the complete XP CD, can NT Backup
be downloaded from the Microsoft web site?

Thanks

Unfortunately, no. :(

Since NT Backup is a little crippled in home (can't do the Automated System
Restore), it seems a little wiser to search out something different anyhow.

There are programs that focus on data backup. Some of these include
disaster recovery methods along with their full system backup options.

Imaging programs are a good alternative to look at too. Many of these
include options for pulling selected files out of the image files.
