I am new to computers, but I understand it's wise practice to back-up the hard disk weekly. I am trying to do this for the first time. I'm using the onscreen guidance, and a book 'Windows XP in Easy Steps'

I get the Backup Wizard, and I ask for 'All Information on this Computer' to be backed up. In the next box the 'Place to Save Your Backup' is shown as 'floppy disk' (which I am unable to alter). Then the 'Completing Backup Wizard' box appears .. and I click 'Finish'. The Backup Progress box appears, but it is immediately overlaid by another box saying: 'The files for the recovery diskette could not be created. THe operation was aborted. Okay

This is a new formatted floppy disk .. what am I doing wrong?

Unless you have several HUNDRED floppies available, you need to buy
and install a CD or DVD writer

I use Backup MyPC (written by Veritas, sold by Stomp) to make a
monthly backup to DVD-R

Hi,

You might also consider using a removable hard drive for backing up your
stuff. The trays can be had for less than $20, a second drive isn't much
either, you probably don't need a big one, and get a copy of Norton's
Ghost.

Use Ghosts clone option to write a copy of your hard drive every now and
then when things are working well. If your main drive throws a rod or
somehow breaks down, your second drive will work just by switching its
jumper from slave to master and you're good to go again. Being a
removable drive also keeps your backup out of the way if you get
infected with something you can't fix easily.
