Hard Disc Space - Compression

Hi

I have Vista Home Premium running on a PC with a 40GB C drive primary hard
disc. My programs are on this C drive, all my docs etc are stored on either
of separate D drive and H drives.

My primary drive is running at about 30GB used/10GB free space.

I continually clean out my C drive of temp files etc, clear my cache
yadayada...but...typically how much space would I re-gain by using the
Compress Drive tool (visible when I look at C drive properties)?

When once a program installer extracts the necessary files they are no
longer compressed.
[.jpg's, .mp3's etc ARE compressed (as are all music and picture files).
Recompressing these gain little to nothing.]

I have seen the Microsoft built in file compression give back more than 25%
free space on a packed system partition.

That being said, I would never suggest to anyone to compress their entire
system partition.

I typically will compress those utilities and programs that I use
infrequently, if I can not immediately obtain a larger drive.

My thoughts: Yours is a very small drive for a Vista system. Nevertheless,
you should be able to live with a 40 GB drive if you keep tabs on the System
Restore files. Disk Cleanup has an option on another tab that lets you
delete all but the last Restore Point. I do this once every 2 weeks and my
disk usage goes from around 40 GB to 13 GB immediately. Just make sure your
system is running smoothly so you won't have to revert to some old point.
Usually, the most recent is good enough. And BTW, I have loads of program
on my Vista system, and other than Restore Points, I don't think I'll ever
need more than 25 GBs. (I don't do music or video files)

A new HDD seems a likely route...this WILL mean a re-activation of Vista via
phone in Australia, right???

And, EW, I can't find any TAB in Disc CleanUp area that relates to 'old-er
System Restore points'...

Hi Rod,

I looked at Disk Cleanup just now and it's definitely there in the "More
Options" tab. Really. It's a fine way to reclaim lots of disk space taken
up by restore points you will probably never need.
