I have a hp computer. I recently contacted hp to ask how
big of a hard drive I could upgrade to. They
repied "windows xp home edition will support a hard drive
no bigger than 80 gig",is this true?

False.

The original version of XP (Home or Pro) is limited to 137 GB. SP1 added
LBA48 addressing. I forget what the upper limit is on that, but it's larger
than you can easily obtain today.

in Windows XP"

There may be other limits due to IDE controllers, but XP itself does not
limit you.

(I admit that my largest HD is merely 80 GB in size, so I haven't
experimented with large drives yet.)
