happy face symbol in emails

How do I make, or what symbol do I type, to get a happy face for emails,
rather than doing it this way? :-)

That's what smiley characters (emoticons) are: just a string of
characters. Whether they get presented as a graphical icon depends on
whatever e-mail client you use. So you entering a smiley into your
e-mails doesn't mean the recipient will see the same graphic image.
They may only see the text string.
