hangs at 'preparing network connections' screen

I was wondering if any one could help me figure out how to
troubleshoot this. I have checked the KB to no avail. this
is win 2k pro. it boots in to safe mode and safe mode with
networking. But not normal mode. it get stuck at the
preparing network connecitons screen. sometimes it will
go to applying user settings but never beyond that. i have
looked at the system events log and the events are related
to the safe mode start up. as in network stuff. I'm not
sure what Sentinel adn the parallel port have to do with
each other but that is one other error. Irq 9 is shared by
ACPI, Ultra SCSI 160 and 2 USB.. IRQ 11 is shared by
Wildcats Video and 3com NIC. any ideas????

It may help in your search to know that "Sentinel" is possibly a
security dongle on the parallel port (or Windows think's there is one).
