Hanging or rebooting

Hi,

My W2000 server is persistently hanging or rebooting, usually when the hard
drive is being accessed directly, eg through Explorer or sometimes if you
start up Internet Explorer. I've checked for viruses and its clean, and I've
tried to update Windows but it keeps rebooting or freezing in the middle of
installation. It even freezes or reboots in safe mode.

I suspect a hard disk problem but there's nothing in Event Viewer relating
to disk errors, only messages to tell me that the previous shutdown was
unexpected.

How can I confirm a disk error? Can I increase monitoring of the disk in
some way as to catch errors in the event log?

Anywhere else to tell me? It won't do a full chkdsk without rebooting.

Thanks for your help

Download & run the disk diagnostic program that your disk
manufacturer makes available free of charge on his home
site.

If the program gives the disk a clean bill of health then I would
reload Windows 2000 from scratch. To protect yourself against
similar disasters in future, create a disk image with a suitable
program such as Acronis TrueImage.

Unfortunately I can't get it to run a complete test before it reboots!
I've tried disconnecting various bits of hardware to eliminate those as a
factor, but no joy yet.

Try the following (in whatever order is most convenient for you, I
understand most people don't have extra parts lying around):

- CPU heat issues (make sure the fan is turning, heatsink is installed flush
and level to the processor core, thermal paste is applied correctly, and any
fan shroud is in place and secure)... make sure your CPU is not being
overclocked.
- Power supply (should be the easiest to test, just replace with a similar
one and test it.)
- Motherboard (the biggest PITA, save it for last.)

You say "I can't get it to run a complete test before it reboots". Do
you mean "a complete disk test with the manufacturer's program"?
If so then your problem is clearly unrelated to Windows 2000 -
after all, the disk test program uses its own operating system.
Your machine appears to have a serious hardware problem.
Take it to your friendly dealer and ask for advice.
