Hanging / Locking XP

John

Since upgrading my memory (I have checked it using the prog that I
downloaded from the Microsoft Crash site) - and receiving and cleaning some
viruses I am now having problems. The following are just fine:
Outlook Express
Office 2003
Autoroute
Money
Pinnacle
and all other programmes.

The following cause the PC to lock for around a minute when trying to open
them - once open they work fine until something calls for a new page or
window.

Internet Explorer 6

My Computer

Run

Search for files or folders

I am concerned that I may have deleted a file that had been hit by a virus.

Hi John :-)

Try doing a repair of the OS and IE. That should replace any damaged or
missing files. You don't mention which version of Windows or IE you have,
so I'll provide instructions on the P and W2K:

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP

Be sure to visit Windows Update site and let it scan for all needed updates
and service packs afterward.

and..

Windows 2000 step by step repair instructions:

How to perform an "in place upgrade" or system repair.

You only need to uninstall the Service Packs installed *after* installing
IE6. You will have to go to the Windows Update and reinstall all the
necessary updates after the reinstall.

Hope this helps :-)

John--

I would add this to Jan's help for fixing IE. No idea what XP SP you might
have because there are SP specific issues.

I would run Ad Aware and MSFT AS to scan for spyware that can cause these
hangs, and I would run SFC which is part of the IE repair KB. Here are some
IE repair links that might help--also I'd emphasize that you want to insure
that SFC will point to the install files on your HD of any particular
service pack you have . Also check to make sure unnecessary processes aren't
running at Task Manager's process tab and check to make sure no unnecessary
services are turned on by using www.blackviper.com and going to
services.msc.

I have fixed it - There were a couple of "Add ons" that I have now disabled
and everything is fine now.
