I hope somebody out there has some technical knowledge because Microsoft is
not interested in helping me at all!

My problem is I recently cleared out all my temp and bak files and I'm
starting to wonder if that was such a good idea. Having successfully
removed what I thought was several hundred megs of useless "I'll never need
these again" files, I cheerfully went back to a folder and tried to
right-click on a file. That caused Windows explorer to close down.
Inconvenient but not life-threatening.

However, when I tried to right-click on a file on my desktop, the whole OS
hung requiring a soft re-boot. Again, not life-threatening but bloody
inconvenient. I pondered for a bit and came up with the idea of going
through My Computer and using the drop down File/Properties menu but the
bastard had anticipated that move and locked me out again.

Now, before I get comments of 'Twat' and 'Should have known better' I accept
that both of those are a given and feel they need no further airing.

So, does anybody know what has happened? To the best of my knowledge I
deleted no active files at all. I am running XP with the old SP1.

Many thanks in anticipation.

A Twat.

I'm afraid that you're not going to get much of a response on this
problem, friend. I've a feeling that the kind folk who generously
offer their valuable assistance on this group do not know what this
problem is or how to fix it.

There were a couple of similar situations described on the
support.microsoft.com site but these had fixes that required calling
the "for pay" support and getting a "hotfix" from them.

"Fred", in a post (earlier), mentioned that he had run across some
information that points to a conflict between Quicken and XP.

My system continues to deteriorate, so this is apparently a problem
that picks up speed as it heads toward a re-install...

Thanks for the tip - I was starting to get the same feeling.

I think it might be time to dust off the old XP CD and bite the bullet.

Thanks for taking the time to reply.
