hang ups while initializing

Howdy all, when starting up my HP Media Center PC (2.4 Ghz with 4MEG Ram,
Vista Home Premium with SP1), started my account. Once I started...the
screen would come up and the task bar would come up, but then the system
hangs. Tried to use a different restore point and no dice. Cleaned up disk
drive in safe mode, but won't let me defrag. No error messages, nothing,
just hangs up and stays there. I'm concerned this is a hardware problem.
Any suggestions or thoughts before I go and spend $ on having a pro fix it.

Thanks

Have you tried disabling your anti-virus to see if that's causing it? All of
my recent experiences with system hangs have always come down to NAV or ZA in
one form or another...

It's hanging up before any of that could get loaded up...unless I do it in
safe-mode. Any other suggestions. But, I'm wondering if I can't run defrag
in safe mode, is anything else gonna be able to be disabled?

Hi,

It might be worth a try to see you can get "msconfig.exe" running in safe
mode. Just open the run box by pressing windowskey-R and type in "MSCONFIG".
If that will open, you should be able to disable your antivirus from loading
at startup; if you don't need your internet connection while troubleshooting,
of course, it's safer to leave it off while your security's down.

Hope this might help; don't really have any other ideas to offer.

I'll try that...currently running anti virus and the what not to see if there
was a security breach. Is it possible that one of the processors isn't
working? I'm wondering just because it happens in mid-stream.
