hang at checking autorun locations

When the scan is complete the process always hangs at one
of the "checking autorun locations" messages. I have
given it overnight. I have to use task manager to end,
but it appears that this makes the entire anti-spyware
useless.

Have you tried doing it in safe mode to see if it bypasses this point of
error.
