handling Slide out Keyboard

Hi,
For owners with a device with a slide-out keyboard, when you are ON
TODAY SCREEN and press one of the overloaded keys that also acts as the
number keys, is a number outputted and does it take you directly to the
phone screen?

That is the behavior of my device and i would like to disable it, so
that when i push one of those overloaded keys, i will get a character,
not a number. The reason for thi is i have a Today Screen app i have
written that can accept user input in a text box, but when the screen
is open, currently i cannot enter certain characters, because of the
above dilema ( a number is outputted instead of the character)

I have to think this behavior can be disabled, since it only occurs on
the Today Screen and not when other apps such as Pocket Word, Notes or
Outllook has focus.
