Hi,

can some one point me in the right direction or explain what hanldes are in
the task manager? Also is there a maximum limit to these and if so what
effect would it have on the PC?

thanks for any help with this.

Hi Rob,

A "handle" is nothing more than an indicator that a file is being used. A
running process can have a handle on one or more files. Some may be files to
run the process (like supporting library files - dll's, etc.), some may be
files that the process is working on (like a file that you have open in a
word processor). How many handles are being used depends largely on the
process involved.

Thanks rick thats great!

The reason i ask is I have a user who has the following query and was
questioning the handles:

Problem Description: - resource issue with customer's pc, when opening
Word, error works ok, but when saving, file, word has insufficient memory, do
you want to save doc. as a rescued document
Cannot open Event Viewer, 24,000 handles running in task manager

He does have alot of sessions running ie 24 instances of firefox and other
realted applications, is this problem just related to the way the user is
working? or is it a word problem. He has over 1gb of memory.

Hi Rob,

It's relative to the way he is working. He's overtaxing the system
resources. He may possibly have also hamstrung himself by placing limits on
the virtual memory, so you would want to check that as well (either a cap on
the upper size limit <2GB or the volume the pagefile resides on is running
out of space while in active use). There is also a potential that the system
has malware running as well, as that's a lot of open handles even with 20+
instances of firefox running.

Hi Robert,

You may want to introduce the user to Tabbed Browning. This way only one
instance of FF needs to be open.
This will reduce the workload of the system greatly.

The user should also have the latest version of FF installed.

Here's a FF Extension with many options to customize Tab Browsing.
