Method2 I get as far as ren msi.dll msi.old but when I press enter it says
file could not be found.

Hi Snagger,

Before restoring your system, try to install that using one of the
original Administrator accounts. I hope that works out for you.

Hi Jimmy thanks for your continuing support.I did as you advised, windows file
protection completed but no report,During checking pop up ask me to insert xp
cd but told me it was wrong cd,it is the only one I have ever had, could this
be down to service pack 2?

Hi Snagger,

Is it looking for a specific file when it pops up that dialogue?
If so, which folders show up as containing that file when you
use Start / Search? (Search Hidden and System Folders too)

Hi once again, sorry to keep bothering you,if nothing else I am learning the
way round my computor with your help.
The actual pop up says.
"FILES THAT ARE REQUIRED FOR WINDOWS TO RUN PROPERLY MUST BE COPIED TO DLL
CACHE.
INSERT YOUR WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION CD-ROM NOW."
Having done this it says a newer edition of windows is installed. The only
thing extra I have installed is sevice pack 2.

If so, can you browse to: C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 ?
