248MB is actually under the minimum requirements, which are 256MB, but to be
realistic and not have loading times measured in ice ages you'll need 384MB
if you're using Windows XP.

i get the same problem? during the game it comes up: instruction at .......
referenced memory at ........ The memory could not
be read"
then returns to my desktop!
and i have 512mb ram 120gb HD amd althlon xp 3200+

well same problem here... I play it at an AMD3200+ with 512 RAM and 120 GB of
Hard disK...
If I try to start CS source it gives me that error message before I can even
play the game and HL2 just stops in the middle of the game at random stages
:s I have te restart the game over and over cause It keeps shuttin down every
5 minutes

im wondering... did u build ur computer from scratch?
i did and think thats why it won't run normaly? but im not a expert!
and the AMD 3200+ is only 2.2 ghz. i thought it was 3.2 hence the number 3200+
i found this out 1 week ago and im very upset.
because the numbers dont mean anthing with AMD processors.

Actually the numbers mean more then you think.

An Athlon with a rating of 3200+ is comparable to a Pentium 4 @ 3.2Ghz.

My Athlon 64 3200+ runs at 2Ghz. Yours runs at 2.2Ghz. But they compare on
average similiar, I'm guessing you have a non-64 version or the 64 with only
512KB of level 2 cache.

Frequency alone means nothing. You can still tell your buddies with their
Pentium 4s that your Athlon runs circles around em. ;-)

Have any of you guys tried getting onto Valve/Vivendi (if you got the retail
version) about this? (not just posting on their forums but talking to
them).

Weird memory errors are hard to troubleshoot as theres often very little
that we can say it's definitely such-and-such. In my experience the most
common reason is simply other applications causing something else to be
upset, so try shutting down everything else, including virus scanners (and
definitely very intrusive ones like Norton).

How's Half-life 2 "stopping" does it reboot your machine? Cause your
machine to freeze, or exit to desktop?

Are you guys "over-clocking" your systems? More and more games do not like
to be ran on computer that are not running at their factory set speeds.

Over-clocking = running a system faster than the factory set speed.
Shortens the "life" of the components on the motherboard (ie: RAM and
processor).
