My HD is dead, or so I think. I get a black screen with
error messages about file hal.dll missing or corrupt and
drive 0 (my HD) not functioning properly. WinXP OS never
starts. I have tried to boot from recovery cd but it does
not work. Tests ran with dell support came up with message
that drive 0 = failure. Did I get a virus? Is this fixable
without purchasing a new HD? If I need to install new HD,
I want to try and recover some info from old HD, possibly
using knoppix. Has anyone tried this or can anyone offer
some advice?

Try shut-down,on starting tap the F8 key,select safe-mode
enter as ADM.Then run:Sfc /Scannow
In cmd prompt. If you cant get that far, boot to xp cd,
recovery,type:CHKDSK C: /R
When its thru type:EXIT For .dll errors or problems,
theres only one stop;technet at microsoft, type:.dll err
ors in search, look for the on-line .dll utility.

Sounds like a corrupt bootsector. Did you try to install
another OS or SP1?
Boot with XP cd and repair bootsector with fixboot
command. Below is from Help and Support

FixbootWrites a new partition boot sector to the system
partition. The fixboot command is only available when you
are using the Recovery Console.

fixboot [drive]

Parameter

drive

The drive to which a boot sector will be written. This
replaces the default drive, which is the system partition
you are logged on to. An example of a drive is:

D:

Example

The following example writes a new partition boot sector
to the system partition in drive D:

fixboot d:

Note

Using the fixboot command without any parameters will
write a new partition boot sector to the system partition
you are logged on to.
