hal.dll missing or corrupt - windows will not start

I have been having internittent boot failures. The blue
screen flashes on the screen so fast that i cannot see
any info about the error. i start in safe mode the reboot
and xp starts correctly for several days. yesterday i
went to boot my computer and i get the following error:

Windows could not start because the fololowing file is
missing or corrupt: <windows root>system32\hal.dll

Any direction would be appreciated.
