MSAS seem to load very slowly during startup and also had
some impact on shutdown. tested it with my firewall and
antivirus off. has anyone had this problem?

Earlier builds of Microsoft AntiSpyware had issues with startup. Also, it
depends on the detections, if you have spyware it will take some time to
load, this has been my experience. Go to the scan page and choose link to
view the detected items and remove them. Please install the latest build of
Microsoft AntiSpyware 615 if you have not already:

Startup fine, windows will not shut down. During
shutdown, the system hangs. Eventually, gcaswupdater.exe
is still running and does not shut down.

If using dialup connection, this is the problem. The
smallest of the two files that make up the definition
files is about 1.2 MB, the other is about 2.5 MB. This
means updating, even checking for updates could take over
ten minutes.

Also, if you are using a broadband connection, make
certain you aren't using a splitter to connect a DVR
(i.e., TiVo) and your computer. If you live in an
apartment/condo complex, some sable companies use
splitters to connect the various apartments, as
installing one smaller box is cheaper than using one box
for every apartment/condo. Doing this can, AND LIKELY
WILL, case an interuption of your broadband connection.
I noticed this problem when using a splitter to connect
my Time Warner Cable DVR and cable modem to the same
cable outlet using a 4 dB splitter.

Try running Windows Error-checking feature, as there
might be a problem in a boot sector, or even the hard
drive's surface itself. If the boot sector is corrupted,
this could case startup and shutdown to take a while.
This happened to me a few years ago, with the computer
I'm using to write this reply, and I had to run Scan Disk
to fix it.

Do the following:

1. Open My Computer.
2. Right-click on the hard drive's icon.
3. Selcet Properties.
4. Click the Tools tab.
5. Click on the 'Check Now..." button.
6. Check the 'Scan for and attempt recovery of bad
sectors' check box.
7. Click the 'Start' button.
8. You might get an error message stating that the scan
couldn't be completed at this time and ask if you want to
finish the scan at the next boot cycle, click the 'Yes'
button.

Hopefully this corrects any problems.
