I think I'm finally in the market for a new brand of anti-virus.

I've been running Norton 2003, it has expired, and when I went to their
site, it said that I could buy a renewal. I went through everything
including entering all my credit card information, and got a message saying
it wasn't able to process my order and to contact customer service. Tried
it again, and got an "Error 500, Internal Server Error."

I emailed customer service and got a reply saying they no longer support it,
and to go to their on-line store and buy an upgrade to 2005. Three emails
back and forth, and that's all I'm getting from them, despite the product
being advertised on the website as being available for sale.

Between that and last year's rebate fiasco, I'm done with them.

Any suggestions for another virus scanner? I run Windows 2000, Zone Alarm
for a firewall, and Spybot and Adaware for spyware detection and removal, so
all I need is virus protection. I see you all talking about KAV a lot --
would you all say that's about the best for the money?

Thanks in advance.

You didn't mention using a modern, secure, unhijackable browser.

Best for the money? How about $00.00 ?

I highly recommend AVG Free Edition.

Please set your newsreader to quote the material you are replying to,
and then trim it to the relevant parts. Thanks!

Not if you're one of many who don't like the way KAV can suckdown
system resources. I'd suggest doing trial downloads of various AV's.
See which one(s) you prefer. Don't put too much significance on having
the absolute "best" AV, when it comes to detection. Personally, I'd
recommend getting something to run resident and monitor for changes to
start-up files, file associations and your registry. Something that
requires your "ok" before it permits writing the change.

I gave up on Symantec when they started the "Product Activation" scam.
I am happy with NOD32. They allow more than one installation for one
license. VB100 gives them the best virus detection score.

Uh, you might get away with that, but I don't think the EULA allows
that. I own a license.

anything but Norton or McAfee...

BTW you can get a renewal for 2003. If you want to stay on hold for 1-2
hours on their support line. They will update it, I have a customer that I
updated around 15 copies at once but was on hold for almost 2 hours waiting.

but IMHO.. in the following order

AVG free <-- for me AVG integrated best with both outlook2k3 and outlook
express.
Avast Free
AntiVir free
or NOD32 for $

You're certainly not the first one I've heard this from. Although I was
much against Trend Micro's PC-Cillin many years ago, recent reviews and a
short evaluation has changed my mind about them. They seem to have really
improved their product. McAfee's newest version has taken a turn for the
worst. Sophos is a very strong antivirus, but last time I evaled it, wasn't
very good already infected files (their strength is in proactive
protection).

Personally I just use Grisoft's AVG. But more and more people are
recommending Eset's NOD32.

If you want to stay in the same class as Norton and McAfee, I'd say go with
PC-Cillin. They're a leading vendor that has been doing this for a long
time, they've made improvements, and winning a lot of reviews. Antivirus
like Sophos, Panda, and Kaspersky are strongest in network based Antivirus.
