There is an abusive hacker'message which is splashed across the top bar of
every IE window/page that i open. It seems my varsity's website has been
hacked into and many students who had accessed the site have the same
abusive words inserted into the IE ages.

What can or what should I do ? TQ

Hi TQ,

With a limited budget there is little you can do except take the site down
until you can find the inserted code (or service). Contact you hosting
provider, they may have some suggestions or tools that will enable them to
identify and remove the hackers tracks. If the hacker is just changing the
title of the IE Window then look for a line of javascript like
"document.title='hackers message'.
Immediately you could change the default start page on your web site (see
you hosting provider for how to) to display a short message that you are
undergoing maintenance and expect to return soon.
Being a University site you should be able to find someone with the skills
to do this for you.

Regards.

Are you trying to fix your computer or the Web site? Assuming your
computer:
Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for
malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince you that you
owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.
