Hack Backup to back up specific folder tree?

I see that the Vista Backup Wizard is remarkably non-configurable. File
types can be selected, but beyond that you can only choose to back up
selected file types on additional partitions, since the active Windows
partition is mandatory.

This is a very blunt instrument which produces much, MUCH larger and broader
data backups than we want. I am rather disgusted with it. For our
purposes, this utility is a step backwards (except for some partial DVD
support -- partial since it only works with blank DVD's).

Is there any sort of a hack that would restrict the backup selection to the
user folders?

Or has anyone looked at getting XP's NTBACKUP running under Vista?

A Google search on the last question will get you the info.

The backup application shipping with Vista is pants isn't it? There's no
other way to put it really ;-)

I see there is a utility to restore files from NTBackup-created backups:

Petri has a page which shows how to copy the files required from XP to
allow you to use NTBackup under Vista.

I use Second Copy from http://www.secondcopy.com and have done for a
number of years now. It means spending another $29.95 but it is a
powerful application and is money well spent imo.

Thanks, Neil, I'm breathing easier already, despite the pants-load of stuff
we're discussing. I'm delighted to see that someone has worked out the
procedure for using NTBACKUP.
