The Problem:
I cannot print via my LAN Print Server - print job does not appear in
spooler. The HP printer works if connected direct to a PC USB port.

I have XP Pro SP2 installed on all PCs/Laptops in my Linksys LAN/WLAN.
Attached to the router is an Iomega HDD StorCenter with an integrated USB
Print Server to which I connected a HP ColorLaser. All firewalls, MAC filters
etc are off. I have full admin permissions.

The PCs are within MSHOME the HDD in WORKGROUP. I can access the HDD and I
am able to map directories. In the HDD rout directory I see the Print Server
printers Printer1 and Printer2.

Via Printers and Faxes > Add Printer I can add the Print Server printers.
Property settings are:
Sharing: off
Ports: \\Iomega-xxxx\Printer1
Bidirectional enabled
Advanced: Always available / print immediately

If I try to print a test page, the print job goes somwehere, no error
message. The print job does not appear in the spooler list.

I contact Iomega on a daily basis, their support stuff just say it should
work. HP and Linksys say not our problem.

Before I return the Iomega HDD I need to know if it is an XP issue.

Your solution is highly appreciated.

Rob

Disable Bi-Directional in the Ports tab first.

Check the system eventlog for print errors.

If you are not getting any errors, turn on Informational notifications in
Printers folder, File , Server Properties Advanced.

Does Iomega recommend netbios connections? \\printserverdevice\printer. Do
they support LPD or Raw printing? If LPD or raw support is available, you
could set this up targeting a Standard TCP/IP Port.

Alan,
thanks for your quick reply. Bi-directional is now disabled, Informational
notifications is turned on and I exhanged the Iomega HDD. The problem still
exist, however now we can narrow it down:

I get an DCOM error 10009: "DCOM was unable to communicate with the computer
dhcppc2 using any of the configured protocols".

Could you point me into the direction what to do.

I double checked that Norton and other firewall settings are off and MAC and
other filters on the router are off.

Alan,
please ignore my previous note regrading DCOM 10009 error. I sorted that
out, forgot to reboot the system after installing the new HDD, but even with
the new HDD the printer is not responding.

I created a new Local Port: \\dhcppc2\printer1
The Test Page now appears for a split second as print job in the spooler
list, but no print out and no error message in the event log.

I created a Standard TCP/IP Port via Print Server Properties > Ports
Printer Name: Printer1
Protocol: RAW
Port no: 9100
Test Page appears as print job in the spooler list, but no print out. I get
an error message in the spooler list but not in the event log.

What should I do now ?

Alan,

the Print Server problem is within the Iomega StorCenter HDD. The Iomega
Developer Center called me and admitted it is their product. Now I am sitting
with them to resolve the issue, it seems that I am not alone having the
problem.

Thanks for your help
