Is anyone here a regular Gym goer? I've just signed up yesterday with a mate from uni, with the aim of getting back into shape! The facilities look great, but no pool which was a bit of a shame.

Only prob is its 15 mins walk away  ;)

On my way there now :D

Save yourself some money ... walk there & back twice a day, no need to go inside. ;)

I just lost 10lbs just thinking about it ... or was it 20 quid?

Ive lost over 1.5stone in two months

Just cut rite down on eating and when I was hungry ate bran flakes. It's hard but works. Just need to tone up now. Thts what i'm not looking forward too.

I've manged to tone up my stomach a bit more, stopped eating crap food.
Eating a lot more vegetables & fruit, my GP's nurse offered great advice and help on what to avoid.:thumb:

Phew, I'm exausted now! Did 2 hours and I can really feel it now (hence the short sentances as my arms ache! )

For the past couple of months i've been weight training virtually everyday, trying to build some mass and get butch :D. Its hard to stick with it, especially in this heat and doing the job I do, its just physically draining.

Have you noticed any difference so far Reef?

I don't go that regularly, but my mate goes at least 4 times a week for an hour so I go with him sometimes. He does about everything in there but is concentrating on weights at the moment.

He warms down with a 1500m run everytime, on an ascent, and does the last 200m sprinting.

That is after he has already done an hour doing everything else.

He is insane. He is more toned that is humanly possible considering he eats so much ****.

I lost weight by not eating, and have been working on my stamina. If you want to get toned and fit, just do a lot of running. A good run will excerise all you muscles, and gives similar effect to doing a short weight training excersise except you actually become healthier, as opposed to bigger.

Ya for sure, I used to struggle on 40kg on a bench (free weight) now I can do 60kg quite easily. The most i've benched is 80kg on the free weight. Me arms, wrists, shoulders and back are looking alot more defined. I dare not try anymore because most the time I work out on my own, and if I couldnt lift the bar off my chest it could get intresting :p.

I bought all the kit meself, a bench , bar and weights/plates, a z bar and hand bars. Nothing fancy, I got it cheap enough and it does the job ;). Just got to try and stick to it.

Reef the most you should be training if you are trying to build bulk is 3 times a week, remember the muscles as well as working them hard need time to recover in between sessions, this is most important, almost as important as the workout itself, as is your general diet.....But stick with it mate and you will notice a difference.....And remember the longer it takes for you to gain it, the longer it will stick with you....If you try to gain muscle mass to quick, (as in people offering you sweeties and you accept them, you know what i mean) when you stop it will fall off you as if you never had it... You might want to bear that in mind....

Long long time ago, I used to go to Karate classes for about three months. Three times a week, two or three hours an evening.

All us noobs didn't even get to throw a punch for 8 weeks, it was all punishing excercises.

And when we did eventually throw the most basic punch, it was at a ropebound weighted pole, for half hour solid, until the sweat ran and your knuckles hurt.

It was a somewhat serious karate club, they threw you out if you didn't try.

Within 3 months I had muscles popping out where I never even knew they existed. Stomach flat as a board. Could bunny hop up twelve flights of stairs, no bother.

I only quit because I got an evening job 2 nights a week (club DJ).

All you need to keep fit is within your own body. Most of it is basic excercises, like situps and push-ups. You don't need no gym, just use your own body's weight. And discipline.

Gyms rely on their revenue from lack of discipline. Cos the average white Brit ain't got the mental nous to do it himself, he needs a controlled enviroment. btw, I'm a white Brit, before you get the 'ump :)

Fitness and well being, more than anything, is a state of mind. And, to a great degree, diet.

There ya go, my pont of view, don't take it too seriously, if you weak willed, use a gym. If you like posing in spandex whilst breaking a sweat, use a gym. If you think a £5K machine will get you fitter than using everything already available in your own body, use a gym.

Flops, 11.5 stone, in mid-50's, 5' 10", regularly active, must confess to the beginnings of a beer gut since quittin' smoking :)

And anyway, I'm allergic to gyms, designer posers upset me :p

Yeah, there was a bit of that going on at the gym I have to admit. I just turned up in a tshirt and shorts and didn't care what I looked like.

I think you're right about being able to do it yourself without a gym, but I really don't have the discipline. If I'm paying £20/m though then I have to use it!

I'm not in really bad shape, but when a 50 year old lady next to me could run for 45 mins faster than me for 10 mins, I felt bad! Hopefully the next few months will rectify that so I can at least try and match that ;)

Yeah, that's a big one! You can work for strength or work for size. John's youngest boy used to work out at a gym every evening & he had a similar experience just after he started when some of the bulky macho's were giving him a hard time & this little old lady came & wopped their asses on everything  she wasn't big, but she'd been working out there for years & was way stronger than they were & she gave him some real pointers on training. was much more use than his 'personal trainer'

Oh, & Flops... I'm told that, for a male, taking an Aerobics class can give you a whole new appreciation for spandex
Not many males take Aerobics ;)

Myself, I bought myself a rowing machine a few weeks ago. Wanna get back in shape for the wedding.
I just stick it down in front of the TV, shove in a movie or a tape of CSI, & bang... Ive rowed my way through two episodes before I even notice. I'm doing that every day, except weekends, for three weeks now & I'm much fitter than I was & have definitely shed a few pounds I didn't need :D
Find I look forward to it each day, sitting down in front of the Telly with a good DVD or tape is a treat & it gives a whole new angle on the couch potato thing :D

This is catching on. We gonna be the fittest crunching crew on the planet lol

No more partys people, just carrot juice ;)

I went on a 12mile bike ride today. Gonna do it again next week. Hopefully a bit longer. Wanna go around the coast from seacome to west kirby.

Couldnt find another map easily so heres a link.

I use 5 kg training weights to tone & improve upper body stregth.
You need to take it easy when you first start getting fit or going to the gym.

And remember that the person next to you is completly different to you & what may look easy to them may not be for you, but dont worry and Do Not train when injured!

The rapper LL Cool J (!) runs 12 miles every single morning.

That puts me to shame slightly.
