Can't see the point in using gyms, if you're able bodied enough to use a gym then you're able-bodied enough to use your own body to keep fit.
Have a word with a Karate or Martial Arts instructor and he or she will outline all the exercises you can do that will give you the same benefits as all that expensive gym equipment, sit-ups and press-ups being the most obvious.
The other thing you need to keep fit is a pair of legs and some good footwear. Go walking or light jogging, very good for the body and probably for the soul.
There's also swimming and riding a bike, to my mind much more enjoyable than working up a sweat on some automated multi-thousand piece of equipment.
I will concede there are some advantages to using a gym - discipline being the most advantageous. Lots of folk probably don't have the inclination or self-discipline to do any of the workouts I've outlined above but once they've paid out for a gym membership or entrance fee, bought all that overly expensive designer gymwear and are in the company of fellow fat gits, er, sorry, figure conscious hard working individuals
they are going to exercise. Cos if they don't they will look and feel silly.
And there's also the pose consideration. All them fellas wearing gym clothing that's especially designed to show all their three piece suite off in the finest detail, in front of all them lycra-clad ladies. My goodness
