problem.

GXChat Alert

I had the exact same problem. These files come thru something called "Goldpocket" which may have been downloaded to your system for some other game - probably something to do with interactive videos or movies. Anyway, simply finding these files and removing them does not do the trick.
Shockwave tech support suggested the following:
Shockwave doesn't need these files in order to function properly (all the Shockwave lab machines in their side do not have any of these files), so it's safe to remove them:

Go to Control Panel and then Add/Remove Programs and see if there is a listing for GX. If so, click Add/Remove. If no luck, do a Find for GX*.*, and if you find any files, see what folder they are in and see if the folder also has an Uninstall (or Unwise) file. Use this uninstaller to remove the program. If still no luck, look in C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files. Do you see any file there that has GX in its name? (These are Browser Help Object files. If you know what you are doing you can explore each further and decide whether to keep.)

To do a clean uninstall/reinstall of Shockwave, do the following: <- Most Important!

First, get fresh copies of the Shockwave uninstaller and FULL installer files from this page:
http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/alternates/

After getting the uninstaller and Full installer, do the following:
1. Close your browser and any application that uses them, INCLUDING ALL INTERNET EXPLORER WINDOWS AND AIM, Yahoo, MSN or other MESSENGERS. Check your system tray for other applications that are always 'online'.
2. Uninstall Shockwave player using the uninstaller.
3. Look for files called Dirapi.dll and iml32.dll (Director runtime files) in the system folder (C:\Windows\System32 and/or C:\WINDOWS\system32\Macromed) and delete them
4. Locate the Shockwave folder and delete it.
5. Restart your machine.
6. Log in as administrator to be sure you have full access to your machine
7. Close all programs running in the background. Please refer to Step 2 for a list of programs to close.
8. Install Shockwave player using the stand-alone installer that you have downloaded previously.
9. Restart your machine and test out Shockwave player at:
http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/welcome/

In addition to this - I also manually removed all the old files for Shockwave 7, 8 & 9 (go into Software, and System 32 and registry files for the old ones)
This WORKED! After many frustrating hours dealing with this problem I just want to share the solution with the world. Good luck
