Hello,

I'm new to frontpage and I am having some issues with it.

I've been trying to make a guestbook using the template
provided but when I try to post in it (unaltered) I get
directed to a non-existent site with a --WEBBOT-SELF--
extension.

When I try to change the extension in the code it gets
automatically changed back, why does it do that? and is
there a way to get it to stop?

So I edited it in another editor so that the extension
would be correct but then I get the following error
message:

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for cannot be displayed because
the address is incorrect.

The address is perfectly correct and when I refresh I get
the page (a blank guestlog.htm that I created to contain
entries in the guestbook) but there are no entries or
added data.

I also noticed that the

u-file=

is set to a location on my computer. When I try to set it
to an online location it gets automatically changed back.
When I change it in another editor it still doesn't work.

I'm not sure what is going on here. I have tried getting
rid of all of the webbot stuff and it still won't work.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

1. If viewing this on your local machine you must have web server installed
with the FP extensions installed and then view the page via
http://localhost/pagename.htm

2. If viewing this on the web, you host must have the FP extensions
installed and you must have published the site via FP's http publishing mode
to the server.

This occurs because the FrontPage Server Extensions
aren't installed (or aren't working) on your Web server.

Among other things, the server extensions scan each
outgoing page looking for the string --WEBBOT-SELF-- and
replace it with the correct program name. FrontPage can't
specify the program when you create the page on your PC,
because it doesn't know what the name or path of the
program will be on the Web server.

I checked in the page options menu and support is turned
on for frontpage server extensions (I'm not sure if that's
what you were talking about).

I'm not sure what web server is and I can't find any
information on it in the help section.

I also cannot find any information on http publishing
mode. I don't know what that is but I just saved the files
regularly and then ftp'd them to my site using SSH secure
file transfer.

I don't know how to install fp extensions if I don't have
them installed already. Also, does this mean that only
people who own frontpage will be able to use my guestbook?

If you haven't guessed I just bought the frontpage today
so I might need things dumbed down a bit. Thanks.

If you have the extensions turn on, then you have most likely corrupted them
by using FTP.

When you have the FP extensions applied to your account, do not use FTP to
upload any content. You need to remove the extensions then re-apply them to
your account.

Once the extensions are re-installed, open your web on your local machine in
FP using File Menu | Open Web and select your local web, then File Menu |
Publish Web and enter http://www.yourdomainname.com then enter your login
info, click ok.

The FP extensions are requires for forms, guest book, discussion web and a
few other component to work on the server, and in order for these to work,
the web must be published as via FP' http mode.

Ok.

I tried the ftp in frontpage and it says that the server
does not have the frontpage extensions. My web site is
hosted by my school server and I don't have any say as to
what they put on it.

Am I able to put the extensions just on my account on the
server? or is there some way to get around this?

Where do I get these extensions?

Thanks.

You can't install the extensions on a remote server, only the server
administrator can do this.

You only option is to search for a 3rd party guest book service or script
that you can install in your web space.

Ok.

Thanks so much for all your help. I wonder why microsoft
doesn't release the source code for the guestbook.

Why should they, it is a function of the FP extensions, which are free, and
any host can install them if they so choose. Plus there many guest book
script freely available as well as service that provide them with many more
features.
