I have a weird problem. My cd rom freezes without a cd in it sometimes.
Nothing will work. I have to reboot. Then....in windows explorer the cd
drive letter doesn't show up and my computer doesn't freeze. The minute the
cd drive letter is in explorer you can bet it will freeze my system.

I don't understand why if I go into Media Player the drive letters come back
and sometimes the drive letters arent' there.

It's too weird. Can anyone relate to this.

Thanks
Kate

my system.

I've had the same problem myself, except I don't know if Media Player
effected it though.
It turned out that I musy have loosened the secondary IDE cable when
tinkering. This meant that the head only occaisionally made contact
with the first few pins. The bios would detect the drive if it was
conencted on boot up, and if it was later disconected it just froze
the pc when one tried to acces it. However, if it was not connected on
boot-up, and was later connected when windows was running, it caused a
crash.

In addition to checking the IDE cables, my advice is to put some
effort into minimising case vibrations.

I had a similar problem. The lockups occurred when I right clicked on a
drive. Editing the registry to restore default values that a program had
altered sorted it out.

NOTE: Export a registry key before making any changes to it. That way if
your editing didn't help, you can double click the exported REG file to
merge the old info back into the registry.

Start> Run > Regedit
Open to
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell
There should be a key in the right pane named Default
The value should be the word:
none
If it shows anything else, edit the key and type none as the new value.
Reboot to test.
