I am trying to attached drawn triangles to sides of a jpeg picture to cover unwanted areas by grouping. The group option is grayed out when I select the jpeg picture and triangles. Is this possible what I am trying to do ?

You cannot group a shape if it is a placeholder. I am sure one of the shapes
in the selection that you are trying to group is a placeholder.

What Shyam said. So try this:

Hold down CTRL while you drag the jpg image. That will make a copy of it,
but the copy will be a normal picture, not a picture-in-placeholder.

Try grouping that with the drawn triangles.

If that does the job for you, have a look here:

Do this before using PowerPoint seriously

All the suggestions are good ones, I think, but see the one about turning
off Automatic Layout in particular.

That should prevent this from happening in the future.
