Grouping contacts -- disappearing

I have several hundred contacts and have grouped them into
different interest categories, which I use quite often.
Yesterday I attempted to send a message to one such group
and got the error message that one or members didn't have
an email address. When I opened the group, all the
selected members were gone. The group was EMPTY. How did
this happen, and how can I recover the group as it was?

List the steps you used.
Outlook does not use groups in the address book.
It uses distribution lists.
