Group Policy updates for networks makes defender FAIL to update

I've noticed that on my computer at work, defender NEVER succeeds at
updating. At home, it's always successful. The difference is, at work, all
the "windows updates" are handled by the server. At home, auto-updates are
enabled. The only way for me to update the defs on Defender at work is to go
to windows update and load it separately. Is that something MS is working on
fixing? Or is this a "feature" of the software that will make it unusable
for network systems (because we all know users aren't going to go through
that whole trouble every time.)?

Windows Defender is designed to be a good corporate citizen and update via
whatever server AutoUpdate is configured by policy to connect to. If that
servier is a WSUS server, the administrator has been able to enable Windows
Defender definitions to be distributed since January of this year. There's
a good step-by-step posted in the .networking group.

If that server is a SUS server, Microsoft has chosen not to distribute
Windows Defender definitions over that mechanism, since it is approaching a
December 2006 end of life.

If patches are internally distributed via a third-party service, you'll need
to consult with the vendors of that service.
