Group Policy Snap-in on XP Home 2002

I am using XP Home 2002 with SP2. I am attempting to (1) remove the default
option that allows windows to add a "network shortcut" to the list of "My
Network Places" and (2) CLEAR the list that is already there.

I access MMC and attempt to add the snap-on "Group Policy" but that snap-in
is not available from the snap-in list.

Three questions: (1) can I add GP functionality to this edition of XP? (2)
Is there a procedure that I can use to prevent shortcuts being add to my
network list? (3) Is there a way to clear or somehow eliminate the existing
shortcuts that have already been added to that network list?

I fear that GP is not going to be available for this edition of XP Home. So
any info on how I might "bypass" the need for GP or clear that list would be
appreciated.

Find the desired policy setting here, then edit the registry accordingly.

Great...Thanks for the link. I have skimmed thru the spreadsheet, but I am
not sure how you are suggesting to use this information.

Group policy objects for the most part are stored in the registry.

You guys are great for referring me to all this great information. The link
to boyce.us site is pretty much the same stuff that is in the spreadsheet I
downloaded.

The problem is that I am not sure how I should use this great information. I
was thinking that all I needed to do was download another GP ADM file and
install it on my machine that would update the available snap-ins. Is it more
complicated than that? I have found admfiles for WXPSP2.msi at this site...

Reread the original question, please. I need a little more instruction on
the procedure I should follow to customize my version of XP.

Thanks again you guys for all the help. I am beginning to see some light
here, but it is still to dark for me to see.

You'll need to manually edit the registry according to the specific policy
you wish to enforce. There is no policy editor for XP home.

Wayne,

Ooops.

Group Policy (gpedit.msc) is not available in XP Home only XP Pro.

The only way that you can use any policies is to add, adjust or set the
proper key in the registry.

ADM files are Administrative Templates. ADM files add items in Group
Policy. They do no good on XP Home, because the adm files are accessed
through Group Policy.

In

Group Policy, better known as GPedit, does not exist in Windows XP Home.
This option is only available in Windows XP Professional. Your only option
with XP Home is to edit the registry directly.

Alrighty Boys - Thanks for your guidance. I will start looking thru all the
"Full Policy Names" and see if I can find something that looks like what I am
trying to do. Any suggestions on where to start?

You may want to check my web site, www.dougknox.com, Win XP Utilities, Windows XP Security Console. This utility allows you to apply many of the per user policy restrictions on a per-user basis, in XP Home and Pro.
